Teresa Franklin

 

President - Teresa Franklin

Teresa Franklin is a Assistant Director in Clinical Applications at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, Iowa. UI Health Care is a fully integrated academic medical center that includes University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Physicians. Teresa has over 14 years of experience in the development and support of Healthcare Information Technology, she currently leads a team of developers/analysts in support of UIHC’s nursing and ancillary clinical documentation.  Teresa earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Education from South Dakota State University and has achieved ITIL Foundation Certification in IT Service Management.

The UIHC has been recognized as a HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 facility of EMR Adoption in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings, a 2014 enterprise Davies Award winner and has achieved Hospitals & Health Networks' Most Wired Status annually since 2010.  The UIHC was also recognized in 2015 by Forbes as one of America’s Best Employers and America’s #1 Health Care Employer.

 

 

 

Denise Grafft

President-Elect - Denise Grafft

Ms. Denise Grafft is an Assistant Director of Clinical Applications at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, Iowa. UI Health Care is a fully integrated academic medical center that includes University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Physicians. She has 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, involved in direct patient care nursing with experience in the Ambulatory Clinic and Hospital/ICU settings.  Throughout her career she has been actively involved in the implementation of EHRs, both in the role of a clinical manager and now in IT.  As an Assistant Director in Clinical Applications, she capitalizes on her clinical experience to design and implement workflows across roles and specialties, with a focus on staff cohesion and patient safety in a dynamic healthcare environment.
The UIHC has been recognized as a HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 facility of EMR Adoption in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings and achieved Hospitals & Health Networks' Most Wired Status annually since 2010. The University of Iowa is proud to be among the early adopters of the Iowa Health Information Network (IHIN).

Denise earned a Baccalaureate of Science, Nursing from Mount Mercy University and has achieved certification in FCCS (Fundamental Critical Care Support), been an ACLS certified instructor, participated in LEAN training workshops and is actively pursuing her MBA.

 

  

Nicholas Dreyer

Treasurer - Nick Dreyer

Nicholas Dreyer is an Assistant Director in Clinical Applications at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, Iowa.  UI Health Care is a fully integrated academic medical center that includes University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Physicians. Nick leads a team of developers/analysts in support of UI’s Laboratory Information Systems and has over 12 years of experience in the development and support of Healthcare Information Technology.

Nick earned his Bachelor of Arts in Management Information Systems from the University of Northern Iowa and is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS). He is currently pursuing a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Iowa.

 

  

Secretary - Jennifer Cunningham

Jen Cunningham is an Informatics Manager in Information Systems at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Mercy Iowa City is an acute care hospital and regional referral center that draws patients throughout southeast Iowa. Jen has over 14 years of experience in all facets of the system lifecycle in Healthcare Information Technology. She currently leads a team of system analysts, nurse informaticists, and communication operators that support Mercy’s core clinicals, ancillary systems and infrastructure.  Jen has earned her Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on Informatics from the University of Iowa and is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS). She is passionate about informatics and capitalizes on her experience to streamline processes while making the best use of the technology available.  

Mercy Iowa City was awarded the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) 5 Star Rating as a Top 2% of all hospitals in 2017 and 2018 and was a Top 100 Hospital in 2017.

 

  

Advocacy Liaison - Eric Pahl

Eric Pahl is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at HealthTech Solutions (HTS), a cloud-based health information technology company responsible for a HIPAA software platform hosting mobile applications and artificial intelligence engines to support coordinated clinical care team communication and decision-making for organ procurement and transplantation. Eric designed this proprietary software architecture to handle HIPAA compliance for PHI data transmissions among numerous different organizations for emergency and complex care coordination. He overcame many challenges building a Health IT company from the ground up, including; information security, learning and executing agile software development practices, growing the software development team, funding a pre-revenue start-up, growing the company to revenue, and being accountable to private shareholders. HTS is supported by the National Institutes of Health and other federal, state, and private granting organizations. Eric and his co-founder were recognized by Forbes Magazine 30 Under 30 class of 2018 for founding one of the most promising companies in Health IT.

Marketing and Communications Chair - Kristopher Marnin

Kris Marnin is Team Lead Application Developer of Clinical Applications at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, Iowa. UI Health Care is a fully integrated academic medical center that includes University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Physicians. Kris has over 10 years of experience in the development and support of Healthcare Information Technology, he currently leads a team of developers/analysts in support of UIHC’s OR and procedure clinical documentation. Kris earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems from University of Iowa and has achieved ITIL Foundation Certification in IT Service Management.

Program Chair - Lorna Waggoner

Since 2001 Lorna has been delivering HIPAA/HITECH Privacy and Security training to organizations throughout the U.S, Canada, Puerto Rico, Africa and Dubai.

Lorna has delivered training material to both public and private classroom settings. Clients include: University of Utah, Microsoft, Cerner, Ascension Health, Kaiser Permanente, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, The Veterans Administration, SmartHealth, The Longstreet Group, Hewlett Packard, McKesson, The Iowa Hospital Association, State of Iowa, State of Oregon, GHX, Health Alliance, Flex Benefits, and many more.

She has been a presenter at events such as; HIMSS Chapters, HIPAA Summit, The InfoTech Conference, Iowa FLEX Conference, Indiana Rural Health Conference, Illinois Critical Access Hospital Conference, Western Health Alliance and more.

As the Director of Business Development, she has generated new business and maintain business for a multi-region territory from 2003-2017. Consulting and recommending services for clients to comply with HIPAA, HITRUST CSF, PCI DSS, and other security regulations.

Currently, Lorna is focused exclusively on training and HITRUST CSF client’s engagements.

Prior to her tenure at ecfirst, Lorna and her husband owned and managed ExecuTrain of Central Iowa, Computer Training Franchise.

Prior to that she was a General Manager overseeing 3 states in the Long-Distance Telephone business.

Lorna has been involved with HIMSS since 2006 as a board member holding several positions in the Iowa Chapter including President and is now on the National Chapter Task Force and holds the Vice Chair position.

 

 

 

Web Chair – Erick Shrier

Schrier is the Director of Information Systems Technology at Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City, Iowa. Erick also serves as the HIPAA Privacy/Security Officer & Integrity/Compliance Officer for the organization. Throughout his career he has been actively involved with the organization’s EHR optimization, compliance, policy, and security enhancements. His passion for promoting innovation within the healthcare setting has helped reduce costs and gain efficiencies. Erick has over three years’ experience in healthcare leadership and seven years of telecommunications management prior to entering healthcare.

Erick earned his Bachelors of Health Services Administration from Upper Iowa University. He is finishing his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) with an emphasis in Organizational Development from Upper Iowa University.

 

 

HIE Liaison – Stan Rankins

I have two Bachelor degrees - one in English and the other in Management & Information Systems. Currently, I serve as an Integration Architect at Telligen. For the last 14 years, I have been working with clinical quality measures or population health management in various capacities - primarily in an information technology role. For the past 7 years, I have served as the lead technical adviser for implementation of both the QDM-based and CQL-based HQMF within the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid's (CMS’) Measure Authoring Tool (MAT). I am a lead technical adviser to the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus (CPC+) operations and design team for QRDA Category III implementation. I also serve as a technical adviser to the measure developers who create and maintain the CMS Eligible Professional (EP) and Eligible Hospital (EH) eCQMs.

In addition to the above roles, I have worked on various data integration solutions. Being a certified HL7 CDA specialist, I am well versed in CDA and CDA-based Implementation Guides. I have provided various HL7 CDA implementations in the past, including but not limited to solutions that used the Continuity of Care Document (CCD) or other CDA-based document formats. I have also provided data mapping solutions for HL7 v2 messages, ANSI X12 or proprietary formats being provided by multiple systems.

I am very active in the standards community. Previously, I served as a committed member on both the ONC S&I Framework’s Query Health and Clinical Quality Framework (CQF) work groups. I am a current member of the following workgroups within HL7: Clinical Quality Information (CQI) and Clinical Decision Support (CDS). I am also a member of the Quality Data Model (QDM) User Group and the CMS-led QRDA Committee workgroup, which is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the CMS QRDA Implementation Guide for the Eligible Professional and Hospital Quality Reporting programs.

Due to my work within HL7, I have been involved in the creation or maintenance of various standards. I am a co-editor of the following HL7 Standards:

  • Representation of the Health Quality Measures Format (eMeasure), Normative R1
  • HL7 CDA R2 Implementation Guide: Quality Reporting Document Architecture - Category III (QRDA III)

I have been highly involved with updates to the following standards:

  • HL7 Cross-Paradigm Specification: Clinical Quality Language, Release 1
  • HL7 Version 3 Implementation Guide: Clinical Quality Language (CQL)-based Health Quality Measure Format (HQMF), Release 1 - US Realm
  • HL7 CDA R2 Implementation Guide: Quality Reporting Document Architecture - Category I (QRDA I)

Member Advancement/Student Liaison - Molly Kuhn

Molly Kuhn is an Application Developer within the Clinical Applications Division at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, Iowa.  UI Health Care is a fully integrated academic medical center that includes University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and University of Iowa Physicians.  Molly has over 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry providing direct patient care as a nurse in ICU/inpatient care areas, supporting clinical EHR workflows, as well as analyzing/developing varying aspects of the EHR. 

The UIHC has been recognized as a HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 facility of EMR Adoption in the inpatient and ambulatory settings, a 2014 enterprise Davies Award winner, and achieved Hospitals & Health Networks’ Most Wired Status annually since 2010. 

Molly has earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa, a Master of Science in Health Informatics from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and is Board Certified in Nursing Informatics.

Social Media Chair -  Tom Feldman

Tom Feldman is a Senior Application Developer in Clinical Applications at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, Iowa. UI Health Care is a fully integrated academic medical center that includes University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Physicians. Tom has over 11 years of experience in the development and support of Healthcare Information Technology; he currently leads the development of the infection control documentation and reporting and also works with blood and clinical documentation. Tom earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Computer Science from Western Illinois University.
